Top Hat

A tall hat for gentlemen aiming high

Rigid, black, shiny and tall, the Top Hat, or Topper, epitomized Victorian Britain and its values, which like the hat made a great impact on the whole world. Until well into the twentieth century, the formal day wear for men of black frock or tail coat, black trousers, and a stiff collared shirt was not complete without a top hat.

Lords, politicians, ministers, doctors, even judges out of court wore top hats when walking about town, or lounging in their clubs. A symbol of wealth, dignity and social standing, the Top Hat was high and regal and made men look taller, more imposing and handsome.

Today Top hats are still the dress code for the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot race meeting. Top hat and tails are still the favoured choice at many English weddings.
