A very English Hat Summer days, sunshine and punting on the river – this quintessentially English picture – would not be complete without a young gentleman attired in straw boaters, the proper headgear of an oarsman.
Boaters were popular summer hats for the middle classes in the early part of the century, and relieved gentlemen from the bowlers worn during the winter months.
To this day, Cambridge University students enjoy boating on the River Cam, where they have fun punting with beer and good company.
